Many of our clients come to us to reduce or eliminate their use of medications. However, depending on your diagnostic assessment, your therapist may, on rare occasions, may refer you for a psychiatric evaluation. These services are provided by a physician who specializes in the medical treatment of mental health disorders. Oftentimes, the psychiatrist utilizes psychotropic medications, supportive therapy and education to treat the mental health condition.
The terms, counseling and psychotherapy, are often used interchangeably and are known to some as “talk therapy.” Psychotherapy is a general term referring to a therapeutic interaction provided by a trained professional to an individual, couple, family or group. It aims to teach mind/body/spirit tools increase clients’ sense of well-being, and improve mental health by reducing uncomfortable symptoms and self-defeating thinking and behaviors. The therapist utilizes a variety of techniques to achieve this goal.
